Real Beauty Sketches

Watch this film. You'll hear a lot of vocabulary related to the description of people.

How does the film make you feel? What is the message of the film?

"You are more beautiful than you think"

This is the publicity slogan of Dove, the line of soap that commissioned this short film.

The film has gone viral and has been praised by many people but it has also received criticism. Here's some of the criticism. However, some of the points made in the video ring true: people, and especially women, are some times too critical of themselves.

The files may take some time to download - please be patient.

After downloading, double-click the file. Follow the instructions of the Installer. After the installation is completed, a shortcut named "DigitalBook" will appear on your desktop.
Double-click it to open the Login screen.

REMEMBER! To activate your digital book for the first time, you need your personal access code. If you don't have it, ask the teacher for it. If you've already used the activation code, then you can get in using the username and password you created the first time.

Windows 8 users: If you experience problems accessing the digital book after installation, you need to download and run an update in order to make your product compatible with Windows 8. Click here to download the update.

If you have any problems, write a comment and I or other student will try to help you.

Reunion

The following short film is a commercial for Google. It's spoken only in Hindi, but I'm sure you'll be able to understand the story without much difficulty.

Now we are going to work together to put this story in words. We are going to use GoogleDoc. Go on the document for your group: B1A, B1B or B1C, and help write the story.

There are some rules.
  • You can only write a maximum of 60 words per day. You can come back the next day and write another 60 words, or less. It's OK if you only write 20, 10 or 1 word.
  • You can continue the story or you can add details to what other people has written.
  • You can change text written by other people, if there are mistakes.
  • You CANNOT alter facts. If one person says that the two men are brothers, you cannot go back and delete "brothers" and make them "friends".
  • You CAN add details to text written by other people. For example if someone wrote "The two men were brothers" you can go back and write "The two old men were brothers, but they were also the best friends in the world."
Using Google's "Revision history" feature, I can see who has participated and exactly who has written and who has erased any text. If you write something stupid, I will know. If you write something great, I will know. I will use this information to decide my mark for this activity.

This activity is not obligatory, but students who collaborate will improve their participation mark.

A friendly reminder

Repeat with me:

Before I go back to school on Wednesday I will have completed the following tasks:
  • Download and install digital workbook. Instructions here. Windows 8 users, you'll need to install a patch. You'll need the activation code I gave you. If you've lost it, write to me.
  • Do pages 10-11, 20-21 and 30-31 in the digital workbook. So far, few people have done them.
  • Register for our moodle classroom, English 1st batx. Enrollment key: fredeenglisha/b/c, depending on your class.
  • Read "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole" (thanks, Jan, for the links) and, if you so choose, do the extra work. Instructions in moodle. If you need extra time for the extra work, let me know extra-quickly. Test on the book, on the week of January 13th.
  • Have fun, enjoy time with family and friends, use English and come back ready for a wonderful second term. It'll be amazing!
Write or comment below if you have any questions.

And of course, Happy New Year!
